Melvin House Hotel Description
The Melvin House Hotel occupies a listed townhouse building, which dates from 1883 and was designed by celebrated architect Sidney Mitchell for John Ritchie Findley, the founder of Scotland’s national newspaper, the “Scotsman.” Oozing traditional character, the interior boasts great public rooms – including a galleried library on the first floor – with wood panelling, parquet floors, Persian rugs, stained glass, coffered ceilings and elaborate fireplaces. Accessible via a marble staircase or a small elevator, the 22 guestrooms are all tastefully decorated and furnished with everything you would need to ensure a comfortable stay. The grand breakfast room is situated to the rear of the property, with views over the Dean valley. There’s also an intimate and comfortable bar furnished with fine Chesterfield sofas, which you can sink into at the end of a hard day’s sightseeing.

We were really impressed with this small and very friendly hotel. There were 8 of us in our party and we all agreed we'd stay there again. Princes street is about a 5-10 minute walk away but there are some lovely restaurants along the way, we tried an italian and it was really nice.

Amazing interior (panelled walls, lovely ceilings etc) Old fashioned and maybe a bit tired but comfortable enough. No trouble finding places to eat within 5 to 10 minutes walk - Queensferry Street and George Street.
